Monthly Disaster Preparedness Tip - August 2000
If a disaster should occur, or just a small injury happens, all
households should have a small supply of medical items. Collectively
these items are known as a First Aid Kit. You can assemble your own
medicinal items, you can purchase one at a drug store, or you can get
one at the local Red Cross office.
How you put together a First Aid Kit is not what’s important. What is
important, is that you have one available when you need it. If you put
your own kit together or even if you purchase a kit, it’s a good idea to
make a list of all of the things that you think should belong in the
first aid kit. Then you can be more certain that you will end up with a
complete supply of medical supplies.
A good kit should consist of the following items:
- Adhesive Bandages (Band-Aids)
- Iodine pads
- Alcohol Cleaning Pads
- Antiseptic Towelettes
- Triple-Antibacterial First Aid Cream
- Adhesive First Aid Tape
- Sponge Dressing Pads
- Fabric Fingertip Bandages
- Watertight Medication Carrier
- Fabric Knuckle Bandages
- Instant Ice Compresses
- Children’s Bandages
- Cotton Tip Applicators
- Ammonia Inhalant
- Bee Sting and Bite Relief Pads
- Finger Splints
- Latex Barrier Gloves
- Tweezers
- First Aid Guide, and
- a suitable carrying case.
Get started on this list now and you can get other supplies on a weekly
basis until you are fully prepared for any upcoming disaster. Also add
any other items that would be suitable for your individual family needs.
It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to First Aid
preparations.
