The "bike-powered" juicing system, the Pedal - Powered Vegetable Squeezer - Juicycle ® since 1990, from In-the-Sun Engineering - A MEANS FOR HEALTH 'For hire' at home parties. It also makes nut-butters and & snow cones. With other attachments, can also 'quick change' to a flour mill, or a beverage blender. These pages outline an appropriate technology design effort. Presenting the public domain release of the Parker Pedal-Powered Vegetable Squeezer (pppvs) 'do-it-yourself' Juicycle ® 'classic' stationary home-built plans. The prime directive has been to create this 'peace machine' from common parts, using common tools, carpentry and bike skills, and requiring no metal welding. Plans are included below. Print and build. The plans specify common fasteners and hand tools. The 'prime mover' centerpiece is a step-thru (women's') bicycle frame, with a five- to six-inch head tube. The primary wheel can be (3, 5, or 7spd) gear-hub, or single-gear 26 inch free-wheeling wheel with a 'solid' airless tire, and "Aero" spoke covers for safety. A bare 20-inch front wheel is used as the secondary power take-off. The axle of this ‘secondary’ wheel is adjusted so that a ‘stub’ is on one side, the remainder of the axle is protruding on the other. This allows cantilevered mounting on the system 'module'. The second wheel is driven by the pedal-driven wheel. One spoke of the open end of this ‘secondary’ wheel ‘pulls/pushes’ the accessory handle around like a steel finger. This food processor arrangement is a personal fitness motivator, an aerobic monitor, a field produce concentrator, a compost enhancer, can be adapted to produce emergency electricity, and is compatible to a wide range of physical abilities. The operator is seated semi-recumbent, on a high 'bar stool', with back support. These features encourage an adult-age, convenient-height, kitchen tool for fresh garden juice blends. A kids’ version can be scaled appropriately.

CAD view patent pending Juicycle - Trade Mark/Registered SANTA CRUZ 2007  Juicycle© - SANTA CRUZ 2007        Instructions:

Tools required: Saw, reversible drill, Phillips-head magnet-bit, keyhole saw (2-inch hole saw), marking pencil, bike wrenches, drill bits, inch scale, carpenters' square, and a level.

MODULE

(¾" marine plywood, 12ga. steel, aluminum, or Lexan). The front, back, and bottom plates can use a ‘dado’ treatment - for extra strength and stability. Overlapping edge joints make for simple alignment and assembly. Cut, pre-drill, and join : glue, screw, chamfer outer corners, sand & seal appropriately. If used out of doors, cover and place in warmer area when not in use. Use large washers, re-tighten cantilevered auxiliary wheel often on wood products. Recommending isotropic (solid) materials - like lexan.     Fabricate:

Bottom plate 18” x 18”

Front plate 5” x 12”

Rear plate 5” x 13”

Rear cross plate 5” x 12”

Bulkhead plate 12” x 17 1/8”

Cutting area/sneeze guard - Plexiglas ¼” 18" x 14” ( 2” access hole)

clampdown area 1/2" Lexan 5” x 16 *note bevel cut*

The plexiglas cutting board  *top* can be one piece with a cutout for the wheel protrusion, or two "L shaped" halves.

The unique box ('module'). Use marine wood, glue, screw, lots of paint, dado joints. Be sure there is room for the secondary wheel between the front and aft plates.

*Mark, & drill hole, install secondary wheel, six inches above the juicer clampdown plate, center to the module front and rear plates. Check squares of all box sections. Drill 1/4" hole in seat post and shape a 1/4" slot in a a 3" x 1" ‘U’ bracket as shown. . Mark module center in line with secondary wheel, and attach channel bracket/seat post assembly .

showing slider on seat post. this is troublesome because of the seatpost clam around the frame. I have since found a door opener/air shock could be the superior attatchment here.

Slotted slider allows power spinning to wrench big loads.

assemble with lots of glue, nails or screws. Classic box shapes must be kept square...

Cutting board. Remove when adapting the 'tailgaters' blender.

Module complete::

Cup holders 'holes' can be located at strategic points of horizontal 'cutting boards' . Hefty box -once all put together with 3/4" plywood.

*This paragraph replaces the "slotted 'u' bracket" *(above paragraph)*. This is the perfect 'dead mans' switch and alignment gizmo - with the help of a smallish lift gate damper - very light duty - strapped and pinned in place. I have to name this part 'modulator'.

A 12-inch model worked perfectly. One finds these on dead cars - bonnet, camper lift gate, etc. ... The pin is a screw drilled thru the plastic shock header. Hose clamps secure the modulator to the seat tube. The return spring requires downward pressure to engage the mechanism. Then, when the juicer stalls, lift slightly to "slip the clutch" . This 'modulator' could be slipped into the seat tube, the bottom retainer would be a screw pinning the lower end thru the seat tube. Normal modulator weight should provide enough 'traction'. Primary gearing can be 40/14 with a three-speed gearhub. When preparing for flour milling, 36/16 should be considered, as well as some additional inertial enhancements. Derauller - style gearing may conflict with the supports, as well as needing inversion to maintain this 'mirror' arrangement.

GRANDSTAND

Attach ‘slider’ channel plate (2” x ½” x 12” “C” – shaped channel) to the stool underside , Sandwich 2x4 'blocks' below a 27-inch tall ALL METAL high chair, (no “swivel” seat feature) or metal-and cushion boating seat - with machine screws, washers, and locking nuts. *Drill 3/8 in. holes here for wash down 'drains'. Install 3/8" x 8" bolt and wing nut and heavy ‘slider’ washers as indicated. Sandwich a thick rubber grommet (shock hardware) for flexibility. The stands' system holds the pedals 2-3 inches off the ground at the crank/pedals' lowest swing. This all depends on the geometry of the frame you choose to retrofit. Old Huffy designs have low and short head tube. Check all squares and levels carefully. A very hefty wood stool might suffice indoors only. Cover the seat cushion (nylon-contained fiberfill pillow) with plastic if used outdoors. Rubber shock absorber part adds robust-ness.

FRAME /PRIME MOVER

*Reverse cranks, break & reinstall chain and pedals.

*Prepare 2 ea. brackets, using flat lumber brace materiel about 4-5 inch length, drilled for 10mm axle (recommend gear hub wheel), and a second ¼”  hole to allow appropriate attachment to the frame rack boss.

*Fit solid tire (high-pressure tire, puncture-resistant tube, and stop-leak goop will suffice, keep inflated!), install spoke covers, install wheel, support brackets, axle washers, and nuts, adjust chain, and tighten axle nuts. Lubricate all threads, and washers, and moving parts with appropriate anti-seizing product. This insures long usability.

 REAR SUPPORT

*Cut 2 ea of ½" EMT tubing, mark, dimple with hammer, & bend per pattern. Flatten 1" at the ends, per sketch. Punch or drill 1/4" hole centered on those flats. Assemble with hose clamps at center bottom area and strap clamps at axle area. Study the image for details. Use large, thick washers on the strap clamp cap screws to secure the triangular brace from sliding. Assemble with the help of a T-square to ensure alignment. The graph is one inch grid, the tall section 28 inch, twice, a 5 inch (across) bottom, = the 61 inch "U" shape. The 58 inch angular bracing piece is 18 plus 22 plus 18. Rubber hose pieces slipped on the lower half at the corners can act as 'feet' . This will consume a ten foot commercial EMT product . 3/4 EMT system will make for a sturdier stand.

FINAL ASSEMBLY

*Install rear support, u-bolts & nuts. Check for alignment (seat tube is square to a level floor). Attach module to rear support ends with hefty screws, slide seat post in place (damper attach) - Clamp so that module is square to the floor and secondary wheel contact is made. Tighten seat post clamp. Install gear control shifter to seat tube and syncronize.

note the "broom handle" 'handgrip' /brace.

The 'handlebar' steady grip for the operator exists in many fashions, though the 'broom handle' method is the best. This item also braces the juicer mount area nicely. Tamper is a polished 1 inch sch 40 pvc pipe glued to a 3/4" cap, cross-drilled and zip-tied to the articulated handle. The tamper arrangement could also be a flat spring with tamper, cantilevered from the back area, or a loose freehand accesory. Wrapping the (steel) secondary wheel with wire (cat5 surplus) and gaffers tape (to match mating wheel shape) works fine. A nylon wheel is better shaped, and overall quieter effect. There is always the option to improve inertial mass, usually added to the primary lower wheel.   Avoid top-heavy conditions! Clamp juicer, aligning to the shaft center carefully. Install two stainless screws at the base for future juicer locator, and two 'cup retaining screws' or a non-slip surface under the spout location. I find that an articulated arm with a ramming tamper really helps the juicing operation. Install the (hardwood or bamboo basket) produce source racks, and safety shields. Install a fitness computer. A 'spoke guard' can be made from bender board, or cut from discarded waste bin, or my new favorite, a length of pvc rain gutter. The primary spoke guard can be fabricated from thin foam board, attached with wire 'twist-tie' . A canvas skirt or card table parked to the rear can avoid inadvertent shin injury. Safety shields are to keep fingers and loose knives out of the spinning mechanism.

  Indexing locator screws.

Crank HANDLES MUST BE MODIFIED FOR CLEARANCE. Most clamping dimensions (other than wheetena juicer) require a 'boost' shim to raise centerline to the required height (Sundance Wheetena wheat grass juicers used as reference standard)

-Flour mill : REPLACE HANDLE LONGER THAN 9" WITH SHORTER VERSION: A SIMILAR DRIVER AXLE IS FOUND ON OTHER PRODUCTS. Remove handle and drill 3/16" hole 7" from center. Bend a 14 ga. ss spoke to attach driving wheel to hook handle-less handle. Boost machine w 1" hardwood block. Replace stock 'winged bolt' with a  5/16" x 1" hex capscrew.

Version one - The "stainless spoke tech" -

Remove the wooden handle by unscrewing the handle bolt . Some handles (copycats) are riveted; bend 14 ga. ss spoke to attach driving wheel to hook handle-less handle. This system provides a safety link 'fuse' - in case some improbably hard foreign object gets ingested into the machine.

Version two:

Replacing handle with hardened bolt (1/4-20), with rubber (1/4" hose) sleeve for the driver contact. Keep the wood grip for times of manual mode. Make sure there is clearance for handle to swing-by any module obstructions. Keep impossibly hard trash from falling into the process.

-GSI blender: use handle supplied - it will 'slip out' of square drive attachment unless a short RUBBER hose is placed between PTO axle and handle center.  This will maintain engagement nicely; Boost w/ 1-1/2" hardwood block.

There are other juicer makers with mountings much shorter. By setting the mounting plate to this smaller dimension will limit the rapid interchange of taller processors. The 'Wheetena' standard simplifies some access requirements.

some views of the 1" sch40 pvc ram tamper, return spring, rear support attachments, zip tie arrangement . Tightened friction hinges also suffices. The rear module mounting bolts are 1/4 in. or some metric zip screw equivalent. Note the "round dowl" support of the plexiglas sneeze guard/cutting board.

Avoid operating on soft/clayish/wet ground. Practice safe juicing!

Most of the time I'm'a juicin' - sweet natural unfermented juice. The flour mill has been my latest thrill. I have always been a fan of 'fresh' milled flour for my baking. The enhancements implemented to facilitate this adapting is a snap. However it adds more inertia to the unit. Whilst not milling, install a wheel lock whenever 'underage' rug rats are around. Safety first.

The GSI Blender ARRIVED and it's slick, very sturdy. Plexiglas juicycle sneeze top has to swing out of the way. Two speeds, the *upper* (slower) speed aligns up perfectly, the handle slips off its square drive without a bit of inward pressure while turning. Again, it's your constitutional right to hand-crank this unit.  Martini monday!   European manufacture.

and here is what the wheat-grass juicer assembly looks like:

= = = Juicycle Instructions for use:

= = = Make sure all fasteners are secure. The drainer basket on one side is for the produce & and herbs. A bucket hangs neatly from the juicer 'pulp outlet adjusting screw' for the spent solids. Lately I have been letting the pulp drop to a newspaper on the ground.. the color art is very striking. Some pets love this pre-chewed delivery. Some could be used for carrot cake. A chair for the visiting dignitaries completes the working environment.

= = =  Keep it Clean: The spent pulp is where some fermenting will begin almost immediately. A hearty soup base can be started with the leftover pulp. Adding water will foment fermenting (and interesting wines!). Layering with straw, earth, and moisture encourages worms and the incredible heat/organic materiel for (duh!) a backyard bio intensive permaculture show garden! Remove & clean the juicer after use. Disassemble and scrub the juicer with a bottlebrush & Scotchbrite. Bleach treatment is the industry sterilization standard (approx. 1000 ppm).

= = = Set all parts in a warm, dry place. Treat un plated machine surfaces with food-grade (jojoba, olive, safflower, etc.) oil. Assemble completely dried. When reassembling this type wheat grass juicer, it is important to position the screen carefully. This part is the first to get damaged by incorrect reassembly. A drop of jojoba or lard to the shaft, retainer, and nut threads will insure a smooth, long lasting precision tool. After reassembling the 6 parts (thrust bearing flats facing each other, the key slot lined up, retainer 'gland-nut' not 'tight') into the main body. Cast-iron has its own lubricating properties when in contact with liquids at these speeds and loads (a roller bearing upgrade improves available power). The complete machine is like a 3kg. dumbbell - be wise! The 'pulp outlet screw' must be free to turn, as this is the 'fine tuner' to the efficiency of the juicer. Back off two turns after turning this adjuster all the way in. Trial and error adjustments are required for the different juice materials. If there is a backup of raw "stuff " in the inlet, back off (counterclockwise) the adjustment 1/2 turn at a time. A way to gauge progress is watching the spent solids ejecting and twisting regularly. Re-introduce the 'spent' pulp again and get additional 1/3 juice. A hydraulic press could get nearly all the available juice from the pulp. The wheat grass juicer (when properly adjusted) is really cool by itself (i.e. hand operated, which is your constitutional right, and handy, indeed). The multi-speed foot-operated Juicycle® will enhance a pleasantly quiet experience. In my opinion one of the best inclusive features of this system is that there is no packaging, no landfill contribution (you are growing your own garden, yes?) A ceramic or enameled-tin cup works fine. The wheat grass juicer sounds like open-mouth "chewing". Objects that are as large as the opening will sometimes 'stall'. Twisting the produce at the inlet aids throughput. Smaller items can get 'wedged' in the 'throat'. Let one item get juiced before adding the next piece. A tamper aids the egress. Most food processing methods can create damaging heat (130 Degrees Fahrenheit will damage beneficial enzymes). Back pressure (the 'pulp outlet screw' adjustment), friction, effort, and warm weather can build up 'warmth'. Refrigerating the clean juicer, raw product, and even propping ice against the operation, or popping an occasional ice cube thru the process would prevent heat build-up. The mechanism gets 'warm' on a hot day (a shady spot makes sense), but never hot.

vegan heaven:

Place a paper, coffee, tin cup under the spout. Fresh-picked produce nearby, sprayed clean, with anticipation of some luscious fresh juice! The carrots go in the hopper. Process a half dozen (sliced long) carrots, then a half beet, then some leek, and a clove of garlic (small 1 per cup!), many options of blends occur at this point. Purists enjoy singular ingredients; some cannot handle celery at all! Apple (only the hard ones) can mellow seemingly intense recipes; so does some lemon (rind and all). Wheat grass is the craze, but is the toughest to process. Move the gear shifter into 'low' and trickle some intense chlorophyll 'brain food' into your divine enameled tin cup. Empty the collected extractions before splashing occurs. Dilute with equal amounts distilled water, and share with someone a vibrant zing! Juice spiced with some Braggs & pepper: a great morning alternative to coffee! Get aerobic while Juicycle® - ing! These extracts are not "oxygenated", as with traditional ‘Champion’ juicer design, but juice made the preferred 'triturating' method with a <wheat grass> pressed-juice extractor. Upgrade performance with some obvious expert improvements: racing cranks, pedals & clips, and inertial enhancements can challenge and enliven your cycling and fitness environment. Quiet, healthful, & self-contained! Some will pedal the "Classic" Juicycle ® for fitness. Some pedal-power their juice for health! A food art functional sculpture.

Fresh homemade garden juicing - with The Juicycle ® - The Village garden health tool. The Juicycle® 'Classic' is a sturdy, and portable raw food processor system, using a (NOT ELECTRIC) wheat-grass hand juicer - you push (or cleat into) bike pedals and the Juicycle® re-directs leg energy to the juicer handle- freeing your hands to feed in FRESH vegetable produce - a blending of FRESH liquid extractions known to aid and enhance normal human gland and brain functions. The Juicycle® generates 1 to 10 oz/min fresh juice from an "easy" - to "hammer" pedaling (spinning) pace. This liquid refreshment contains naturally occurring nourishment for everybody. This nutritious concentrate is usually consumed immediately, avoiding packaging and landfill repercussions. This enables refreshment (with some simple garden ingredients, giggles, and little effort)! Certain common vegetable juices are free-radical nibblers (there's that anti-oxidant theme again, hmm). Many are fundamental ingredients to 'Smart Drinks'. This is genuine "nerve food". Initiates describe immediate and noticeable effects (after a sip of wheat grass-celery cocktail). Build a lifetime of fun and synergy. The turn-of-the century hand - juicer machine is oft mistaken for a "meat grinder" - a plated, cast-iron unit. The wheat-grass juicer has a spout. There usually is no steam (i.e. 'tip me over and pour me out'). The Juicycle ® turns the handle three or four times (normal hand-cranked rotations) faster and easier with a 'steel finger'. The Juicycle ® is a sturdy, adjustable, portable, and rugged tool set that will free your hands to blend together your own vibrant, healthful beverage. Fresh juice tidbits:

Carrot juice may be consumed indefinitely. This is usually the recommended base ingredient for carrying the other flavors & herbs. Wheat grass blends well. The richest source of Vitamin A, as well as gobs of B, C, D, E, G, and K. A pint of carrot juice per day has more constructive value than 25 pounds of calcium. Believed to be a natural solvent of cancerous and ulcerous conditions. Skin discoloration after drinking this liquid food is from the reaction of the liver in a cleansing mode. Carrot juice will furnish enzymes, vital atoms, and organic water that most everybody's starved life-tissues crave. One of the best foods for the colon is a combo of carrot and spinach juice.

Wheat Grass Juice This is the star ingredient that is all the rage - the Wheateena juicer is the best tool for this tough stuff, and loaded with key components that cleanses the blood, rejuvenates the liver, and dissolves "bad stuff": B-12 'anti-cancer' stuff.. I use organic wheat berries (hard red), soaked overnight in a warm place. Rinse, strain, & drain 2-3 times a day for 2 days.. sprinkle sprouting berries on 2 inches sifted compost, berries barely touching each other in density. Sprinkle with water, gently. Keep damp, covered, & warm. Put in the sun after 1". Trim to 3" when 6" tall. I get the berries in 15-25-50 lb bags (bulk food special order usually) at organic bulk food stores. Sprinkle berries in areas to reclaim 'real estate'. The best harvest is from sprouts directly in the soil. Too dense of planting in flats slows down the harvest. Grab a hand full in one hand and cut the grass so as to 'feel' the shoots getting trimmed (like hair). Tuck that tight into your hand and grab another bunch nearby and cut and tuck, (etc.) One hand full is plenty. Keep the harvest tucked in hand and transfer in small pinches, right into the hopper of the juicer. This may save spreading the shoots all over while juicing.

Green Pepper juice The wild thing on this juiced is the silicon for the nails, hair, tear ducts, and sebaceous glands in combo with carrot. 1/3 to 2/3 concentration, that clears up skin blemishes. A heavy duty colon cleansing is recommended concurrently.

Papaya juice The green version of this tropical delicacy provides some amazing benefits, the first of which papain, which has the equivalent effect as pepsin in the intestinal process.

Cabbage juice One half pint raw cabbage juice has more food value than 120 lb.. of canned or cooked cabbage. This juiced refreshment is tied to miraculous recovery of duodenal ulcers. A common side affect is gassing .. and is only the result of dissolving toxic buildup in the intestines. High in iodine, sulfur and chlorine, and with carrot, vitamin C, an excellent cleanser and fighter of adipose weight, aiding infected gums, and preventing pyorrhea. (Note: do not add salt!) Potato juice Surprisingly, a small organic potato blended into the carrot mix has natural sugars. When cooked these are converted to starch! Potato juice will clear skin blemishes from the live enzyme content of potassium, sulfur, phosphorus and chlorine. This is great for disturbances such as gout and sciatica.

Kale juice has similar analysis as cabbage and used as such.

Broccoli juice I squeeze broccoli so as to do something with the (sometimes) 'woody' stalks of this cool veggie. I need to cut everything in long quarters 'cause the mouth of my juicer stalls the larger pieces above the chopper thing. Broccoli is cool 'cause it is juicy like celery, and adds a sweet lightness to any blend. Favor of the week: carrot, celery, broccoli, fennel, parsley and leek. Good levels of vitamin A and C.

Parsley Juice This herb, as a juice is the most potent, and must be mixed with carrot, celery or lettuce in small quantities to avoid disarrangement of the nervous system. This ingredient has properties essential to oxygen metabolism within the adrenal and thyroid glands. It is also good to small blood vessel maintenance. Eye ailments can be effectively aided with the assistance of parsley juice.

Beet Juice The builder of red corpuscles and a toner of the blood. Women can benefit with the combo of carrot and beet juice daily. Roots and tops. Again, a reaction of nausea is from the cleansing of the liver. The natural amounts of sodium, calcium, potassium, and a 8% chlorine furnishes a splendid organic cleanser of the liver, kidneys, and gall bladder, and stimulating the activity of the lymph system.

Celery juice is unique in that it contains organic sodium and calcium. The sodium maintains calcium in solution. This organic calcium also decreases the effect of processed carbohydrates (breads, pasta, etc.) i.e. starches that degenerates life - stream. Heating these organic compounds, or any enzyme above 130 degrees Fahrenheit can make them bad, and clog up lymph, blood and colon until *organic* sodium dissolves these 'free radicals' into suspension, and eventual elimination. Sodium is also important to the elimination of carbon dioxide. Celery is also high in magnesium and iron, great blood food.
