Flying Low: follow the dancing arrow

Rules and Prizes

OK, how does this race work?
It's easy!

  • Flying Low is a monthly race event, held on the first Saturday of every month. Just show up on race day before the start time, and decide if you're racing in the Buggy class or the Bike/board class. Get out your vehicle and hop on. The race will always start out facing North, the same direction your vehicle is facing when you take it out.

  • Five minutes before start time, that day's Flying Low course will be available. Launch your GPSD (GPS for Dummies) compass. Then click the GPSD's "Load Track" button and select the "Flying Low" course.

  • At exactly noon US Pacific time (8:00pm GMT) the starting barrier will disappear, which is your signal to GO!! Everyone blasts off at once, following the GPSD's direction arrow from waypoint to waypoint on the cross country course. The winners are whichever Buggy and Bike/board drivers cross the finish line first.

    What can I win?
    Lots of Tbux, that's what!

  • The Buggy and Bike/board classes have separate winners. First place in each class wins T$1000, second place in each class wins T$750, and third place in each class wins T$250. The first place winners in each class also will be awarded the limited edition Flying Low trophy. The only way to get one of these is to WIN.

  • There's also a prize raffle for everyone who finishes the course within 60 minutes of the start, usually T$1000 but sometimes a great prize from a supporting sponsor. So come join the fun even if you're not the fastest and you can still win :-) All the speed and raffle winners will have their glory permanently recorded in the Winners Gallery.

  • Of course, not everyone can make it to the race event every month. So just to make it more fun, each month's racecourse will stay open for the next week and there will be another T$1000 prize raffle for every driver who finishes the course at all. How cool is that!

    What's the fine print?

  • Speed winners are judged by "first past the post", as measured by the finish time in the GPSD finishers list. Fastest elapsed time doesn't count, since someone could start late but still have a faster elapsed time. So if you show up late, you'd better kick it into high gear and try to catch up!
  • Raffle winners are selected either by the "Bedican compass" random number generator or by ThereDice.
  • Only the GPSD finishers list counts for recording finishes. If your There client crashes, or you miss a waypoint, or you accidentally close the GPSD, whatever -- fix it up quick and try to catch up. Don't forget that finishing within the first 60 minutes still makes you eligible for the raffle prize.
  • Only Buggy and Bike/board vehicle drivers are eligible for the speed and raffle prizes, as shown by the GPSD finishers list. Passengers are welcome, but can't win. Boat captains, hoverpackers, and runners can't win either, it's as simple as that. You have to finish the race in the same class vehicle you started -- if the GPSD records your vehicle type as "Multiple", you're out.
  • To be eligible for the race day raffle prize, you must finish the course within the first 60 minutes; that is, you must finish by 1:00pm US Pacific time (9:00pm GMT). Elapsed time doesn't count.
  • Ties will be very rare, since the GPSD times to the second. But in case of ties, prize money will be split and multiple trophies awarded if needed. For example if Speedster finishes at 12:31:22pm, but Zoomie and Pokie both finish at 12:32:01pm (all three driving Buggies), then Zoomie and Pokie split the 2nd/3rd prize T$ and each take home T$500.
  • If there is some technical glitch with the GPSD server, the race may be cancelled with no prizes awarded.
  • The Flying Low host for that day's race is the final judge, and his/her decisions are final. Tough. :-)
