Pt. Reyes National Seashore Stewart Ranch Horse Camp (Olema) plan ahead for next summer OR enjoy winter riding
Pt. Reyes has a lot of appeal any time of year. Many horsemen from the valley stampede to Pt. Reyes in the summer to escape the heat and enjoy the cool sea breezes. Spring and fall of course have their own special charm. But do not overlook the joys of winter at the coast. It can be delightful! Even people that do not normally like fog, find it fun to go horseback riding through the wispy white stuff. You do however have to be dressed for the cold and the fact that even if it doesn’t rain, the fog can condense on the trees and then drip on you and your horse. Remember that fog is a natural insulator and although it may be cold and wet, it probably isn’t as cold as further inland where there is less fog.
An excellent map of the area is available. It shows the trails from Palomarin Beach at the south end to Tomales Point at the north end. Trails are well-marked, as well as distances between points. If you and your horse are accustomed to relatively easy, level terrain, then you need to consider degree of difficulty and changes in elevation on trails. Some are easy and relatively flat, others are steep grades and/or difficult terrain. If you are not familiar with a particular trail you can call Stewart Ranch (415) 663-1362 for more detailed information bout a specific trail, a current conditions, and park regulations. Dogs are not allowed in camp or on the trails. There are many, many miles of trails within the seashore. You could ride for days and cover new ground each day. In addition, right across the road (Hwy 1) is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area with many more miles of trail.

Stewart Ranch Horse Camp is one reason this is such a wonderful place to camp. It is easily accessible, directly off of Hwy 1. It has the best of both worlds: the important conveniences and many of natures gifts. Conveniences include bathrooms, with an electrical outlet and lights and HOT WATER SHOWERS plus water hydrants for stock water. There is also a large picnic area if a large group wants to bar-b-que. Natures gifts include grassy meadows, tree lined brooks and deer, raccoons and fox that wander through camp. Reservations are a must, so call ahead. Day use is prohibited at the Horse Camp. If you need an extra horse for friend or don’t take your own, horses can be rented from Five Brooks Stable, less than half a mile from the Horse Camp.
