Robie Equestrian Park

Looking for a mountain-top experience? Want to get away from it all? Hungry for fabulous vistas and incredible scenery around almost every turn? If you and your horse want fresh air and great trails, Robie Equestrian Park is the place to go.

Robie Equestrian Park is the starting line for the Tevis. The famous grandfather of modern, organized endurance competition is now host to international contestants. The start of this incredible event is actually far more exciting than the finish. Things are relatively sedate as contestants come across the finish line after 100 grueling miles. But the start is a blast. Over 200 horses, jostling for position, cross the start line in the pre-dawn darkness and the forest rings with pounding hooves. If that doesn't make your heart pound, you're not living.

Other than Tevis weekend, the camp and surrounding trails are pristine. It is a glorious place to enjoy nature at its finest. It is easy to watch a coyote trot across the meadow, not far from camp. Please do not invite the bears into camp with untidy camping practices. Both the scenery and wildlife are thrilling. However you must remember that this is a remote mountainous and therefore dangerous area - please be very safety conscious. Interestingly the trails are overall safer and easier than many areas at lower elevations. There are however occasional places that are hazardous. If you have any doubt about the ability of you and/or your horse to navigate an obstacle, it is much wiser and safer to get off and lead the horse through any rough spots.

This is a large camp, capable of providing space for rather large groups. Horse water and outhouses are provided. Reservations should be made by calling Cena Larimer at 916-367-4332. The camp and surrounding trails were built and are maintained by the Wendell and Inez Robie Foundation. It is truly amazing to ride through such incredibly rough and seemingly impassable country and in the midst of this rugged terrain on a small ribbon of trail, made entirely of natural material so that it blends beautifully into the surroundings. There are miles and miles and miles of this magical passage representing countless hours of work, much of it by volunteers, so that equestrians, hikers and bikers can all enjoy this fantastic part of the Sierras. Be sure to bring a camera and lots of film. If you are into topo maps and GPS, wonderful; for the average horseman that just wants to trail ride and get back to camp, try the " Chinese take-out". It is actually a map with decision points diagrammed. The concept is very simple and anyone can stay on the trail using this method, if you pay attention to what you are doing. At each decision point i.e. any place where there is a choice of where to go, there is a diagram which shows you clearly which way to go. There is actually a whole network of trails in the area, for example the Tahoe Rim Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. If you want your trail information off the internet try the Tevis website or the Pacific Crest Trail Alliance website.

Directions to camp: Highway 80 to Truckee. Hwy 267 toward Kings Beach/Lake Tahoe. Turn right on Palisades Rd (7-11 store). Turn left on Ponderosa Dr (only option). Turn right on Silver Fir Dr. Turn left on Thelin Dr (bottom of hill). Turn right on Forest Rd 6 (dirt road with a gate about 100 ft past pavement). Proceed on Forest Rd 6 approximately 6 miles to the camp. For large rigs there is another way into camp, call for directions.
