Tapped In Chat

Tue, 22 Sep 1998 16:28:14 -0700
This chat was part of an all day Tapped In "Open House" on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998. On that day the two schools presented our water pollution project to interested educators. Students in both classes responded through their teachers who did they typing for the chat. This is an unedited transcript. Please understand that because this was a live chat the emphasis was on rapid typing of content. Consequently there will be both spelling and grammar mistakes in the transcript. Also be aware that the Brazilian teachers and students are Portuguese speaking, and English is a second language for them. Consequently they are to be commended for their attempt to chat in English. We have held several chats in Tapped In to both plan and share our projects. Tapped In's live chat capability has been a valuable collaboration tool for our project.
The ASTL <http://www.migal.co.il/teleproj> Water Pollution Project began in the fall of 1997 when ASTL (Art ,Science, & Technology for Learning at Migal Institute in Israel) invited teachers to submit project proposals. Linda Ullah s, (GATE-- 3rd-6th grade Gifted and Talented Education--teacher at Edenvale Elementary School in the Oak Grove School District in San Jose, CA USA) project was then matched with the project submitted by teachers at EEPSG DonIdalina, a high school in the Sao Caetano area of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Linda began working with Tania Callegaro at the University of Sao Paulo, Eliana Fredo da Costa and Eduardo Ruiz Maldonado at EEPSG Idalina to write a collaborative project proposal. The proposal was created through email exchanges. It was written in English although the Brazilian teachers primary language is Portuguese. Our proposal was, then, accepted, and one teacher from each school was invited to attend an international workshop at Migal Institute in November, 1997. Idalina was able to send two of its teachers,Eliana and Tania. This was the first, and to date, only face to face meeting of the teachers involved in this project. At this workshop the project plan was refined and finalized.
The website for this project is <http://www.garlic.com/~lullah/brazilus/water.html> It contains the plan as well as student work samples.
We began the project in December 1997 with email exchanges between the students. Since then the students at both schools have been conducting both primary source and secondary source research using interviews, hands on experimentation, the Internet and library. They have been learning about each others countries and areas, testing the water to learn what types of pollution exists in both areas, discovering the sources for this pollution, discovering the affect of man on the environment, and of literature, art and artists on the environment, as well as the affect of the environment on manliterature, and art.
During the course of this project we have been exploring available collaborative tools in order to attempt to make our project more interactive and collaborative. Tapped In chats have been one of these tools. This fall, our plan is to exchange art and poetry projects related to water, and to analyze our data in order to begin an action project that will help to improve the quality of our water.
Today s Tapped In chat is between students at EEPSG Idalina in Sao Paulo moderated and translated by Eliana Fredo da Costa, and students at Edenvale School in San Jose CA, moderated by Linda Ullah. Our plan is to discuss our project plans and propose our next steps.
Please feel free to join in an ask questions of the teachers or the students. The students will be watching the chat on a screen and interacting with their teachers who will type (and in Idalina s case) translate, as well as possible, their responses

LindaU projects the URL:
http://www.garlic.com/~lullah/brazilus/water.html
MarleneK says, "Marlene Konduc, Junior High Teacher , gifted gr 7 and 8 Science from Edmonton Alberta in Canada"
Judi says, "Scroll back to read what just flew by you on the screen if you want."
IdalinaS says, "We have Ivan and Ricardo that are a part of our project"
IdalinaS exclaims, "And finally Eliana that you already know!"
IdalinaS says, "and Flavia that is helping us today"
LindaU says, "We can answer any questions you have about our project."
Judi wonders if people saw the information Linda put up on the screen.
BJB asks, "Was there any problem with a language barrier?"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "My students are beginning their art and poetry projects"
FelipeZ says, "Yes the information was received. Thank you."
LindaU [to BJB]: "Eliana who is the Idalina teacher can best answer that...Yes, They Speak Portuguese..and I don't...I know a little Spanish as do some of my students"
FelipeZ asks, "Have students attempted to learn each others languages?"
LindaU says, "I have just found a great translation web site called Babelfish. So I think we can now instantly translate all our work."
IdalinaS exclaims, "Yes we did!"
MarleneK [to IdalinaS]: "This question is for your students. Besides thelearning experience of learning about each others countries. What has been a highlight of this project for you?"
FelipeZ asks, "How many students share the computer or computers, and how have you arranged for equitable participation?"
LindaU [to FilipeZ]: "At Edenvale we work once a week for 2 and a half hours in a full computer lab...This year I have26 computers in the lab and 4 in the library for my students to use"
LindaU says, "We work in Collaborative groups"
FelipeZ says, "It must be wonderful to have such a large block of time in the lab. I know some teachers and principals who would like to know how you did this."
FelipeZ asks, "What is the computer sharing situation in Brazil?"
IdalinaS exclaims, "Please tell me who are the questions for!!"
MarleneK [to IdalinaS]: "I directed the question about highlights to your students :)"
LindaU [to FelipeZ]: "I schedule the lab with the lab aide....Our lab is used by all students in our school on a schedule. Part of my program is after regular school hours, though"
IdalinaS says, "Pentium 133, fax modem of 28000 Kb, etc..."
FelipeZ asks, "LindaU, how do you motivate participation in the after school program?"
LindaU says, "Please remember that English is not Idalina's native language, and it take time for them to translate...Also to get student input."
MarleneK understands that time is needed for her question to be answered :)
LindaU asks, "would anyone want me to email them the note about our project?"
LindaU smiles
BJB suddenly disappears.
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "yes please, I would like an email of the note, as well as a transcript of this conversation"
IdalinaS says, "the best thing that we could learn another cultures and share other information that we shared with you and otherpeople about the water quality"
FelipeZ says, "Idalina, cuantos ordenadores tienen...Idalina, how many computers do you have? (En espanol, solo leo un poco de portugues) (in Spanish, I only read a little Portuguese)"
MarleneK [to IdalinaS]: "thank you for your answer :)"
LindaU says, "Our project can be seen at http://www.garlic.com/~lullah/brazilus/water.html If you have a web browser you can play around in our project web site"
Hulda [to Felipe]: "Mucho bilingual!"
IdalinaS says, "14 computers"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "Have your started your art and poetry part of the project yet?"
FelipeZ asks, "Idalina, cuantos alumnos usan la computadora?...Idalina, howmany students use the computers?"
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "Did you use rubrics to evaluate the studentswork?"
LindaU says, "One problem we have had is getting my Mac's and their PC's to be able to exchange files. We have gotten better at that...and so has the technology."
IdalinaS exclaims, "We didn't we are waiting for the bgest idia to do this!!"
IdalinaS exclaims, "around 300 people!"
LindaU [to MarleneK]: "I do use rubrics. I am part of a US Gov't Federal Multimedia Technology Grant and we have developed a rubric for our project...I can send you the URL of the rubric in email if you want"
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "that would be appreciated, thank you"
Hulda holds up a BIG sign: If you'd like to have Linda's backgroundnote or a transcript emailed to you, please tell Linda your email address.
LindaU says, "I am only one class, Idalina has organized many classes around the water pollution project...multidisciplinary approach in a high school"
FelipeZ says, "LindaU would you also send rubrics to fzatarai@csulb.edu? Thank you"
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "My email is MKonduc@epsb.edmonton.ab.ca"
IdalinaS says, "i think that we could do this project by internet that would be cheaper and we wouldn"t have problems with files"
MarleneK [to IdalinaS]: "have you tried to use a chat like this, between your students yet?"
LindaU says, "Yes with a few students at a time. We are trying many experiments."
LindaU says, "but not just student to student...we have had teachers at the keyboard..."
FelipeZ asks, "Idalina, cual es el mayor obstaculo en realizar un proyecto multilingue, internacional en su concepto, y que corresponde a dos niveles escolares distintos? Idalina, what are the greatest obstacles to a project whose scope is multilingual, international, and at distinct grade levels in its concept?"
LindaU says, "My email address is lullah@garlic.com You can email me if you want a transcript or a note or any additional information."
Hulda . o O ( I retract my former sign urging you to give her your email addresses! )
IdalinaS says, "and about the art project we will start to send more pictures to you as soon as possible"
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "I will email you as well :)"
MarleneK says, "This is an interesting project :)"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "good..See our project directions at http://www.davis.ogsd.k12.ca.us/edenvale/gate/artpoetry.html"
MarleneK says, "I'm sure it has brought a great deal of cultural understanding, as we"
IdalinaS says, "one of the problems was the language, we don' t have the teacher support, and money problems, etc..."
FelipeZ asks, "Idalina, como han beneficiado de este proyecto internacional? Idalina, how have your benefited from this international project?"
judi4 [guest] arrives from nowhere.
Judi suddenly disappears.
LindaU says, "One of the interesting things was the realization that Brazilians speak Portuguese...My Spanish speaking students were really surprised"
Hulda smiles
DavidW2 [guest] smiles and thinks that's great
FelipeZ says, "Idalina, amplia por favor, el "etc"...Please say more about the "etc"."
LindaU says, "My students were also shocked to find out that there is feces in the water in Brazil. They want to "fix" this problem"
IdalinaS exclaims, "We have many problems so sit down and relax!!"
LindaU says, "Idalina has a teacher's strike last Spring...and many teacher layoffs last January"
Hulda exclaims, "Yuck! ... Good for the kids!"
Hulda . o O ( terrible! )
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "what happens in a situation like that..where you mentioned the feces in the water..and the kids retold it isn't a quick fix..what is their impression of the country of Brazil then?"
FelipeZ asks, "LindaU, have your students realized that this is also true in most of the world, but in Mexico we drink bottled water while in the U.S. the water is filtered to remove contaminants?"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "I have contacted by brother-in-law (hermano di mi esposo) in Bangladesh. He has a duckweed project in Bangladesh to clean up their water"
Hulda [to Linda]: "What's duckweed?"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "I have asked him to share his work with both of our students"
LindaU [to Hulda]: "It is an aquatic plant that is high in protein and cleans up organic pollution"
Hulda exclaims, "way cool!"
FelipeZ says, "There is a test project in San Diego, CA to clean pollutedwater using carp and water lilies. The lilies grow so fast that they are harvested and sold for some byproduct."
MarleneK [to IdalinaS]: "How old are your students?"
LindaU [to FelipeZ]: "Some have...we are just now ready to explore that...I am planning to work with a Canadian organization called Free the Children"
IdalinaS says, "we think that the government don't really care about the water, but this water is not the water that we drink"
LindaU [to FelipeZ]: "Can you send us more information on that. It sounds similar to what Ikram (my brother in law is doing"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "My students want to know how you get water to drink?"
MarleneK [to IdalinaS]: "have you published the findings of your research project, for the general public to see yet?"
FelipeZ says, "LindaU, I don't have the information but if you contac tthe City of San Diego Water Department they should have it. I will also try."
LindaU says, "In Bangladesh the fish eat the Duckweed and so do the people...It is a food source and it helps grow morefish, too"
LindaU [to FelipeZ]: "Thank you"
LindaU [to MarleneK]: "We have findings posted on our web site...The Idalina students' research is posted there..."
FelipeZ says, "Hulda, thank you for the reminder"
IdalinaS exclaims, "It's a little hard but we will study more!"
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "di you send the url of your web site to people in industry, to gain funds and support from the scientific community?"
LindaU says, "are there more questions"
LindaU [to MarleneK]: "Thank you for the suggestion..that is part of our plan..We have been in a research phase of our project (both schools) now we are nearly ready to move into the social action phase."
IdalinaS says, "we are waiting for your questions, we are here to answer your questions"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "Have your students been able to see the Edenvaleprojects in HyperStudio that we put on our website?"
MarleneK [to IdalinaS]: "will you be taking social action in your own community, or will you be trying to implement action in LindaU's community"
IdalinaS asks, "Linda, why don't you formulate some questions and send to us by e-mail so we can answer to you as soon as possible?"
GretaP arrives from nowhere.
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "We will do that."
DavidW2 [guest] suddenly disappears.
IdalinaS says, "Linda can you send us the address again, just to confirm"
MarleneK [to LindaU]: "Will your class be trying to "fix" the Brazilian situation, or will your actions be limited to within your own community?"
LindaU says, "Our plan is to do both (Edenvale students) but mainly to help with the problems in Brazil because they have more organic problems..our pollution is mostly chemical"
MarleneK nods at LindaU.
FelipeZ says, "Gracias por una discussion informativa. Quisiera comunicar con ambos grupos en el futuro. Disculpe por escribir en espanol...Thank you for the informative discussion. I would like to contact both of you in the future. I apologize for having to write in Spanish. Hasta pronto, until later."
LindaU says, "The goal of the ASTL (sponsoring organization at Migal Institute in Israel) is to have developed nations paired with project with developing nations to help the developing nations"
IdalinaS says, "We had some political people here to talk about the pollution problems"
MarleneK [to LindaU/IdalinaS]: "Yes thank you for being here to answer our questions about your project :)"
GretaP suddenly disappears.
IdalinaS says, "Se want to share more information with you"
IdalinaS says, "Please send us the web address too"
LindaU says, "I hope you all have found our work interesting. Please email us if you have more questions...and check back on our web site from time to time:
http://www.garlic.com/~lullah/brazilus/water.html"
MarleneK says, "Thank you :)"
MarleneK says, "it was nice meeting you all..and good evening :)"
MarleneK waves good bye.
IdalinaS says, "Thank you too, and see you guys later"
LindaU [to IdalinaS]: "I think most of the other people are gone now"
MarleneK suddenly disappears.
LindaU waves by
IdalinaS says, "bye"
IdalinaS has disconnected.
LindaU [to Hulda]: "and Judi Thanks for the help..."
Hulda [to Linda]: "Great job!"
LindaU I will mail transcripts, etc to the people who requested them.
