Cairo became the capital of Egypt in 969. At that time it was called Al-Quhirah meaning "the Victorious". Cairo is the center on Islam in Egypt.

Low light conditions in the Egypt Museum along with not allowing flash photography caused the reduced quality of the photos take in the museum.

Market and Mosque

Mohammad Ali Pasha Mosque in the Citadel

This mosque was built in 1830. It was designed by the Greek architect Youssef Bochna and is modeld on Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The central dome is 21 m in diameter and 52 m high.

Funerary Mask of Tutankhamen

The mask is made of gold and precious stones. It bears the likeness of King Tut. The stipes are ble and gold and the it is inlayed with lapis lasuli, turquois and carnelian.

This gilt wood shrine is called Canopic Naos. The goddesses Isis and Selket stand guard to protect he canopic urns inside.
