Portfolio 4: Railroad Images

Norfolk & Western at Night

These two GP38-2s worked the Lafayette, IN local. Here they rest in the well-lit yard in 1983.

Retired Baggage Cart

This baggage cart, as well as the door to the shed, have seen many better days. Bloomington, Illinois, 1975.

Broken Window

I like abstractions, and this has always been my favorite "whatizzit". This is actually a pane of broken glass from the building right next to the above image. Bloomington, Illinois, 1975.

Stairs to Nowhere

The Monon backshops in Lafayette, Indiana saw little work after the railroad was acquired by the N&W. I looked at this scene several times before the sun highlighted the round window and I knew I had the image I'd waited for.

Santa Fe Over Tehachapi

This ATSF intermodal freight climbs the approach to Tehachapi Loop, near Caliente, California. At one of the most famous railroad sites in the world, trains literally loop over themselves (see next photo). June 1992.

SP Over Tehachapi

Although the SP owned the tracks at Tehachapi (now UP), ATSF leased track rights. Here an SP unit tank train crosses over itself as the locomotives emerge from the tunnel. June 1992.

Locomotive Wheels

Once perhaps the busiest locomotive service facility in the world, the Sacramento Locomotive Works is now virtually abandoned. Some traction motor and loco work goes on, evidenced by these shiny drive wheels. July 1997.
